FAQs

(Frequently Asked Questions)

What is music therapy?

Music therapy is a research-based practice where a qualified music therapist uses music to support a person’s emotional, social, cognitive, and physical well-being. It’s not about learning to play an instrument; it’s about using music in a therapeutic way to explore, connect, and grow. Still, learning an instrument may be a part of the therapeutic process!

How long are music therapy sessions?

Music therapy sessions typically last around 45-60 minutes, but the duration can vary based on the specific needs and progress of the service user. Participants usually have weekly or bi-weekly sessions, depending on funding and need.

What can I expect from a music therapy session?

Sessions are tailored to the individual and may include singing, instrument play, songwriting, improvisation, listening, or movement to music. It all depends on the client’s needs, interests, and goals.

Do I need to be "musical" to participate in music therapy?

Not at all. You don’t need any musical skills or experience. Music therapy is for everyone - the focus is on expression and connection, not performance. Everyone can be musical!

How can music therapy help my child?

Music therapy can support communication, emotional regulation, social interaction, self-expression, confidence, and more, all through engaging and meaningful musical experiences.

Do you accept NDIA-managed NDIS plans?

Not right now, unfortunately. Because we’re not NDIS-registered, we can work with self-managed and plan-managed participants only.

We recognise their cultures, histories and diversity, and their deep connection to the lands, seas and waterways of Queensland and the Torres Strait. We acknowledge the Jagera and Turrbal peoples as the Traditional Custodians of Meanjin (Brisbane), on whose lands we meet, work, learn and play. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging.
