What is Music Therapy?

"Music therapy is used to help people who experience conditions that affect mood, thinking, behaviour, communication and movement, such as autism, mental illness, physical disabilities, dementia, stroke, neurodegenerative conditions and more.

Registered music therapists support people of any age, ability or background. They work across the full age spectrum – from newborn children through to older adults. And they work in all sorts of places – from hospitals and healthcare centres to prisons and private clinics – to help people deal with stress discomfort and pain.

You don’t need to ‘be musical’ to benefit from music therapy.

Music therapy is an evidence-based allied health profession and an approved support under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Music therapy is the intentional and therapeutic use of music by registered music therapists (RMTs) to support people to improve their health, functioning and wellbeing.

Music therapy provided by a registered music therapist improves health outcomes, experiences and quality of life for people and their carers. Evidence shows music therapy improves:

  • mental health and wellbeing

  • speech, communication and social skills

  • body movement, coordination and physical function

  • memory, attention and cognitive function

  • pain management

Music therapists support people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds."

Meet The Music Therapist

Hi, I’m Brad Ames-Thomson, a registered music therapist (RMT) based in Brisbane and the founder of Treefrog Music Therapy. I offer mobile music therapy for children, adolescents, adults, and families. I hold 10 years of experience working within SEN (special educational needs) settings.

Portrait of Brad Ames-Thomson

My approach is psychodynamically informed, meaning I focus on emotional connection, the therapeutic relationship, and the ways music can express what words sometimes cannot. I specialise in working with neurodivergent individuals, including those with autism, ADHD, and developmental differences.

I hold a Master’s in Music Therapy from the University of Roehampton in London and have worked across a variety of settings, including schools, early childhood programs, mental health services, and disability support, both in the UK and Australia.

With a background in performance and multi-instrumentalism, I bring creativity, sensitivity, and structure to each session. I use singing, drumming, improvisation, and digital tools to help support communication, emotional regulation, and confidence.

I’m a proud member of the Australian Music Therapy Association and committed to evidence-based, client-led practice that meets individuals where they are.

Treefrog Music Therapy acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Australians. We recognise their cultures, histories and diversity, and their deep connection to the lands, seas and waterways of Queensland and the Torres Strait. We acknowledge the Jagera and Turrbal peoples as the Traditional Custodians of Meanjin (Brisbane), on whose lands we meet, work, learn and play. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging.
